SUMMARY OF POSITION
The goal of the Children’s Program is to provide support for survivors of domestic violence through crisis intervention and intentional childcare. The Children’s Program intern will provide activities for the children in our shelter during the day while clients attend in-shelter meetings and when parents are in DV Education or support group. This position will also support shelter goals and assist the Shelter Coordinator as needed.
TIME REQUIREMENTS
- Fall 2024 semester
- About 15 – 30 hours per week; capability to have a block schedule; hours flexible
- Children’s Group Tuesdays and Thursday from 6pm-7pm
- Shelter Staff Meetings Tuesday at 1:00 pm
- FAC Staff Meetings first Wednesday of the month at 2 pm (Optional)
- Occasional weekends depending on scheduled activities
- Occasional evenings depending on scheduled activities
- Be available to train new volunteers interested in working in the Children’s Program as needed
- Biweekly check-in with Volunteer Coordinator
Education/Experience:
- Junior or Senior preferred
- Child and Family Studies, Social Work, Communication Sciences, Education, Nursing, Psychology, and/or related fields
- Experience working with children of diverse backgrounds
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care
Skills/Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience and ease working with a diverse population of clients
- Ability to handle crisis situations with sensitivity and assertiveness
- Strong organizational skills
- Demonstrates effectiveness as a member of a team as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiative
- Flexibility and ability to prioritize job responsibilities
- Ability to receive constructive feedback
- Ability to accomplish multiple tasks that require a variety of skills
- Ability to relate with children
- Ability to maintain accurate data and documentation of client services
- Ability to resolve conflict
- Bilingual preferred
License/Credentials:
- Valid Texas Driver's License and clear driving record.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHILDREN'S PROGRAM INTERN:
- Plan and facilitate activities for children during the week and on occasional weekdays
- Reach out to local businesses that would donate time/resources for children to visit for free
- Incorporate educational/instructional activities as well as fun activities
- Maintain education on healthy relationships and healthy emotional regulation
- Provide childcare during the day for clients meeting with case managers as needed
- Develop program and document events, activities and structure of program
- Maintain communication with case management team and other shelter staff
- Special tasks as assigned by Shelter Coordinator or other shelter staff
- Provide support for Children’s Group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm – 7pm
- Provide crisis intervention services as needed
- Provide referrals for and resources to clients and their children
- Assure coordination of services with other agencies
- Assist in the Command Center as needed
